Clare Hutton joined us in 2015 but she's no stranger to Elwood College, even gracing the stage at Phoenix Theatre as a youngster! This is her second year as Director of the Senior School (Years 11 & 12).
Tell us about your teaching career so far?
I started teaching 12 years ago at Camberwell High School, and taught there for 10 years. In 2009 I took two years’ leave and taught in a local school in Hong Kong for a year, which was a fantastic experience.
At Camberwell High School, my first experience of coordinating was as Year 9 coordinator, which I did for three years. The Year 9 program at CHS seems similar to Elwood’s, with an integrated subject and open learning space. For the last two years I coordinated in the senior school, looking after Year 10, 11 and 12 students in my ‘house’ and the programs and house events across those year levels.
What drew you to Elwood College?
I grew up in this area and have always loved it. (As a child I did my dance concerts at Phoenix Theatre!) I have always thought Elwood College looks like a lovely school. Having the beach around the corner is also a great bonus. I like that the school is small and friendly and not conservative. From my research, I could see that Elwood College is focused on ensuring each student is cared for and on enabling all students to achieve their best.
Tell us something about yourself outside of work.
I love reading and also watch a lot of films. I like cycling, walking and jogging and I eat out a lot. I have a very fat and grumpy ginger cat called Oliver.
