Year 7 'kinda scary but great'

Our Year 7s have had a fantastic start to high school. Thanks to Naomi James for this fantastic report on her first week at Elwood College. Naomi is pictured here (centre) with new friends Molly and Aurora.

"The start of Year 7 has been crazy! I went from not really knowing anyone in my class to having some really good friends in a matter of days. Being the only one from Carnegie Primary at Elwood College was a nervewracking thought. I feel like i am in Prep again - being the youngest in the school is kinda scary because all the year 12s are so big! But I think this week has been great and all the teachers are very supportive."

This year we have 90 students in four classes. Year 7 Learning Leader Emma Robbins has been very impressed with the happy and enthusiastic cohort.

The first days were spent getting to know classmates and teachers, touring the college and finding out how everything works. Students also completed academic testing, which helps us tailor learning programs to every individual. In the second week, classroom learning began in earnest, along with weekly swimming lessons, which will continue throughout February.

The Year 7s also joined the junior school for the first Wednesday afternoon sport session. This is a great opportunity for them to mix with other year levels. Year 7, 8 and 9 students can choose between six sports (cricket, softball, volleyball, athletics cycling and walking), with a group of Year 10s acting as sport leaders.

We also had a great time getting to know families at the Year 7 welcome barbecue on Wednesday night.

Looking ahead, the Year 7 camp (March 23-25) in the Grampians is sure to build strong friendships and help all students feel excited about the journey ahead at Elwood College.  Good luck Year 7!
